External Wall Insulation

Overview

There are several external wall insulation (EWI) options available to housebuilders. These systems are designed to improve the energy efficiency and thermal performance of buildings while also enhancing the appearance of the external walls. Here are some commonly used external wall insulation options:

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Insulation
  • EPS insulation, which involves fixing EPS boards to the external walls, offers a range of U-values typically ranging from 0.16 W/m²K to 0.30 W/m²K, depending on the thickness and density of the EPS boards used.

Mineral Wool Insulation
  • Mineral wool insulation, installed as boards or batts, provides U-values typically ranging from 0.16 W/m²K to 0.27 W/m²K, depending on the thickness and density of the mineral wool.

Phenolic Foam Insulation
  • Phenolic foam insulation, known for its high thermal performance, offers U-values typically ranging from 0.12 W/m²K to 0.18 W/m²K, depending on the thickness and density of the phenolic foam boards.

Wood Fiber Insulation
  • Wood fiber insulation, which uses wood fiber boards, provides U-values typically ranging from 0.15 W/m²K to 0.20 W/m²K, depending on the thickness and density of the wood fiber boards.

Cork Insulation
  • Cork insulation, utilizing cork panels, offers U-values typically ranging from 0.08 W/m²K to 0.12 W/m²K, depending on the thickness and density of the cork panels.

External Insulated Render Systems (EIRS)
  • EIRS, a comprehensive external wall insulation system that incorporates different insulation materials, can achieve U-values that meet various performance requirements. The U-values for EIRS typically range from 0.12 W/m²K to 0.30 W/m²K, depending on the chosen insulation material and system specifications. Please note that the U-values provided are approximate ranges and can vary depending on the specific products, thicknesses, and installation methods.

It's essential to consult with insulation suppliers, manufacturers, or building professionals to determine the most suitable external wall insulation system with the desired U-value for your specific project. It's worth noting that each system may have different manufacturers and suppliers, and the availability of specific options may vary.

It's advisable to consult with EWI specialists, architects, or building professionals to determine the most suitable external wall insulation system for your project based on factors such as insulation performance, aesthetics, budget, and local regulations.
