Hemp Crete

Overview

Hempcrete, also known as hemp-lime or hemp concrete, is a bio-composite material made from the woody core fibers of the hemp plant mixed with a lime-based binder. It is a sustainable and environmentally friendly building material that offers excellent thermal performance and breathability. Hempcrete is primarily used as an insulating material in construction and is often used for wall infill or as a render. There are several options available for house builders who are interested in using hempcrete in their construction projects. Here are some commonly used hempcrete options:

Tradical® Hemcrete
  • Tradical® Hemcrete is a proprietary hempcrete product that combines hemp shiv (the woody core of the hemp plant) with a lime-based binder. It offers good thermal insulation, high breathability, and a low carbon footprint.
  • Tradical® Hemcrete can be used as wall infill or as an exterior render.

IsoHemp
  • IsoHemp is a brand that offers hempcrete blocks suitable for wall construction. These blocks consist of hemp shiv mixed with a mineral binder. IsoHemp blocks provide excellent thermal insulation, sound absorption, and moisture regulation properties.

Hemp-Lime Construction (HLC)
  • HLC is a construction method that involves casting hempcrete on-site between formwork or within timber or steel framing. It allows for customised and seamless integration of hempcrete into the building structure.
Hempcrete Systems
  • There are companies in Ireland that specialise in providing hempcrete systems for construction projects. These systems typically include the supply of hempcrete materials, technical guidance, and on-site support for builders and contractors.

When considering hempcrete as a building material, it's important to note that its properties and performance can vary based on factors such as the hemp shiv-to-lime ratio, density, and curing time. Additionally, hempcrete requires careful detailing and construction techniques to ensure structural stability and durability.
It's advisable to consult with hempcrete manufacturers, suppliers, or specialists in Ireland who can provide guidance on the specific hempcrete options available, their application methods, and any relevant building regulations or certifications.
