One the type of construction is chosen the air barrier construction is decided on and specified to meet the minimum allowances if there is uncontrolled ingress and egress of air through the building fabric.

Depending on the type of construction chosen, examples of air barriers include,

At floor level:

  • In-situ concrete/screeds.

  • Appropriately detailed radon membrane or damp-proof membrane (DPM), with laps, joints, and penetrations sealed.

In external walls:

  • Plaster finish.

  • Plasterboard with joints sealed.

  • Vapour control layer, e.g. 500-gauge polythene or proprietary membranes used in dry lined and timber/steel framed constructions.

  • Proprietary air barrier membranes.

At ceiling level:

  • Plaster finish.

  • Plasterboard with joints sealed.

  • Vapour control layer.

  • Proprietary air barrier membranes.
