Adequacy of Workmanship

To ensure compliance with the Building Regulations it is essential to ensure that all materials are used appropriately using a proper standard of workmanship.

Guidance on basic workmanship with respect to conventional types of building work is contained within BS 8000-0: 2014 - Workmanship on construction sites. Introduction and general principles.

Should the methods being used not be covered by BS 8000-0: 2014 it might be possible to prove the methods in question satisfies the relevant requirements by other means:

  1. Demonstrating their performance in use, by providing details of existing building(s) under similar conditions where the same workmanship has been used and is performing as required.

  2. Quality assurance schemes. IS EN ISO 9001: 2015 gives guidance with respect to quality management, should the methods be covered by a scheme detailed in this document it can be deemed to be suitable.

The Building Regulations app provides each of the Building Regulations Guidance Documents A-M. These guidance documents provide additional guidance on any relevant test that can be undertaken to show specific methods of workmanship are appropriate.

All persons involved in the construction of buildings should be competent having completed sufficient training and have relevant experience to ensure a proper standard of workmanship is obtained. If dealing with large complex construction persons involved in the construction should have experience in similar such projects.
