Do I Have To Have a NZEB House?

If you are building a new house then, yes, you will require that your house achieves an A2 standard. The EPBD requires that all member states of the European Union to ensure that by 31st December 2020 all new buildings are nearly zero energy buildings. Part L (relating to the conservation of fuel and energy in dwellings) of the Building Regulations has been updated to reflect the new requirements. A typical new dwelling is built to an A3 BER under the 2011 building regulations. For an NZEB this equates to an A2 BER. Since 2005, energy efficiency has improved by 70%, CO2 emissions have reduced by 70% and the use of renewables in building energy use has increased by 20%.
