What is a BER Rating?

A BER stands for Building Energy Rating Certificate. This certificate measures your homes performance with respect to energy and it’s consumption. The rating is based on a scale from A to G (inclusive). A- rated homes are most efficient with G rated homes being least energy efficient. E.g. it costs approximately 380 euros per annum to heat a standard 3 bed semi detached A Rated home, a D rated costs approximately 1850 euros per annum and a G rated home costs up to €4000 euros per annum.

Do I need to have a BER?

You will only require a BER if you are selling or renting a property. You are legally obliged to provide the BER of the property for all advertisements so that al prospective buyers and renters can see the BER rating. There are a number of exemptions including protected structures.
