A bedroom requires a simple design that functions well but because it is one of the simplest rooms in the house, it is often overlooked. Whether you’re designing or renovating your bedroom, get planning and create a space that’s both practical and pretty.

Plan the Layout

Planning the layout of your room will be the initial step of your bedroom design plans. Create a rough layout on paper, taking into account where the natural light is coming from and the location of any doors in the room.

Start with the position of your bed and work the furniture around that. If you have a smaller, rectangular room, position your bed lengthways and in the corner to save floor space. For larger rooms, you’ll have more options but placing the bed in the centre of the room.

Regarding bedroom storage, decide whether you want fitted or unfitted bedroom furniture. Fitted furniture is usually more expensive and formal but offers a more efficient use of space. Unfitted furniture could be bought in matching sets, or you may want to go for a more alternative look, for example, mismatched vintage furniture. Just make sure that you leave enough space around your bed for tables and room for you to actually move around.

Walls and Flooring

To create the illusion of more space, choose lighter colours. The correct colour scheme will promote rest and relaxation, rather than causing overstimulation in your room.

Colours plays a vital role in creating an atmosphere in your room. Painting your bedroom should be one of the first plans when designing a bedroom. Choose calm and muted tones as a base for your bedroom. This will give you the freedom to decorate your room however you would like.

If you don’t want to go for paint in your bedroom, using wallpaper to decorate your room could be something of interest to you. Wallpaper can be used around the room or as a feature wall and will add character to your bedroom. It can make small rooms appeal larger and will add dimension.

Next, bedroom flooring is all about maximising comfort in your room. Carpet is the most popular bedroom flooring option, but wood flooring isn’t far behind.

Solid wood flooring is a popular option, but a less expensive option is engineered wood flooring. It is durable and virtually impossible to differentiate from solid wood. Another option would be laminate or vinyl flooring that look replicate the look of a wood floor.

If you’re worried about the comfort and warmth of your flooring if you opt for wood or vinyl flooring, all you need is a large, cosy rug!

Light & Ventilation

Having bedrooms on the corner of the house will give you more natural lighting and allow more ventilation as there will be windows on two walls.

While natural light is important, good artificial lighting is necessary in bedrooms as time is spent there when it’s dark. General, task, and accent lighting that are soft and dimmable will help to create a cosy space. Bedside lamps and fairy lights as well a main light will ensure you have enough lighting in your room and gives you options for the mood you want to set.

Privacy

You’re going to want as much natural light coming into your bedroom as possible during the day. This will make your room feel bigger and brighter, but then once evening comes, you’ll want to room to be dark and you’ll want the option of privacy.

Shutters give you the option of adjusting how much light comes into your room, while curtains come in a variety of designs and can be paired with a black-out blind for complete darkness at night. Longer curtains will give your home a luxurious look and makes the walls appear longer.

Another thing to keep in mind when choosing the location of your bedroom is what rooms it will be beside. Your bedroom is private so you may not want to be directly beside or across from a public room like the living room or kitchen.

The Bed

Your bed will be a main element of your bedroom as it takes up such a large amount of space. There are several things to consider when choosing your bedframe such as style and functionality.

Choose a bed that will suit your needs well. If you need extra storage, you could get a bed with drawers or a storage headboard. Think about the size of the bed and whether you need a large one or could you get a smaller bed and have more floor space.

The style of the bed should match the rest of your room, whether you design your room around the main element or if you match your bed with other features in your bedroom. Beds with bold and upholstered headboards are currently trending

Good quality bed linen, a mattress, pillows, a duvet, and a topper are essential for your new bed. Choose a high thread count bed linen so that you know the quality is good and will last. Investing in quality will ensure you feel warm and comfortable in your bed and will improve how you sleep.

The View

How wonderful would it be if the first thing you saw when you woke up was a nice view from your bedroom. When designing your layout, keep the view from your windows in mind as well as where your bed will go.

Whether the view is of mountains or lakes or even just your garden, connecting a room with the outdoors will make the space feel larger, bring in more natural light, and will just start your day off well. When choosing windows, choose ones that will open out and really let you appreciate the outdoors.
