Types of Interior Design Styles II
You may remember our ‘Types of Interior Design Styles’ blogpost from last May. Well, we decided that it was about time to update that and give you some more style inspiration for your home. When giving your home a makeover it can be hard to choose the right style for you and capturing a picture perfect home is a lot of pressure. Growing your knowledge of interior design will help you make the best choice for your home! Here are some eye catching styles of the season:
1. Hamptons
The Hamptons style is very prevalent in Australia. This popular interior decorating style Down Under embraces a fresh, airy palette with natural textures. The interior style is inspired by the design and décor of seaside holiday homes along Long Island’s beaches.
The recognisable colours of a Hamptons-style home are white and blue, creating a beachy interior. Key elements include well-positioned windows to optimise cross-ventilation, plantation shutters, nautical-style décor, and timber floorboards and staircases.
The kitchen usually consists of white cabinets with open shelving or glass paned doors. The worktops tend to be marble or light-coloured engineered stone.
Overall, this interior style is light, airy and nautical. If beach vibes are your style, this could be one to look into.
2. French provincial
The French provincial interior style is très chic, characterised by refined details, rustic textures, and a toned-down colour palette. The wood used is often raw timber or whitewashed wood and the colour palette consists of soft, powdery hues. The look features soft linens and texture combined with luxury – imagine antique furniture and embroidery against warm tones and under exposed beams.
This style is a classic and has been extremely popular worldwide throughout the years. It can be incorporated in every home, giving a sense of sophisticated warmth in the city, and in the country, it fits perfectly with the surroundings.
3. Mid-century modern
Think ‘Mad Men’ interior for this 1950’s and 60’s retro style. The interior is based on function over form but is still very stylish today. The design consists of organic and geometric shapes and boasts a bold colour palette.
Mid-century modern is characterised by contradicting materials and textures but remains clean and simple. The furniture is colourful and comes in many different shapes and sizes. Outdoor elements are brought inside such as wooden accessories and large plants.
If you’re not afraid to mix and match, this design style is for you. Just make sure not to clutter your home!
4. Industrial
The industrial look has more of an edge and may not be for everyone. This urban design consists of raw textures, exposed elements, and metal fixtures. This style is prevalent in New York apartments, with concrete floors and exposed brick walls.
These homes are often minimal and have a neutral, grey colour palette. Colour is not a big feature here but if you want to add some, it could be added in the form of accents like artwork, textiles, rugs, and crockery, although the style still tends to be muted.
The finish is almost unfinished. It is raw and rustic and, with reclaimed wood and salvaged pieces of furniture. It provides for a casual atmosphere that could be calming for you to live in.
5. Eclectic
An eclectic interior is highly personal in character as it artfully mixes elements from various decorating styles into one space.
Since the items in this type of home are so different, the key is to keep the colour scheme and texture constant throughout. Use one texture at least three times throughout your home to maintain consistency. Eclectic décor combines cultures through modern and vintage pieces. You could have a Moroccan rug, a modern glass table, and deer antlers in your living room for example.
Due to the mixing and matching, it can be hard to get the vision of this home and if you think you’d like to incorporate this into your home, make sure you give a lot of thought into the design process. It will be worth it!
6. Contemporary
We mentioned contemporary style in the first blogpost, but we feel it is worth a mention again and it is an ever changing ‘of-the-moment’ design. The contemporary style embraces so many other designs and it is defined as what is occurring at the time. Time is always changing, and the contemporary style changes with it.
This style incorporated modern, traditional and futuristic design, making it one of the most broad and open to interpretation styles there is. However, it is known for its simplicity and subtle sophistication. A contemporary home is always chic and never cluttered. It is timeless.
