Cleaning up after Christmas may mean saying goodbye to the festive season, but it also signifies the New Year! The post-Christmas clean up can seem like a daunting task and it may seem easier to leave your decorations up just a little bit longer but if you gather your family together, stick on some Christmas music, and check out these tips below, the work will get done quickly and efficiently!

1. Take Pictures

Before you begin putting everything away, take a few pictures of your decorations and set up. This way if you like the way you decorated this year you can recreate it again. As well as that, you can have a quick look at those pictures next year to remind yourself of what decorations you have and what you need to buy.

2. Pack up the Decorations

When packing up ornaments, wrap any breakable ones in wrapping paper or tissue. A storage tote with dividers is ideal for ornaments as you can put one or two in each section, keeping them safe for the following year.

3. Wrap your Lights

It’s always a pain when your Christmas tree lights, or outdoor lights are tangled from the year before. To prevent this from happening, get some large pieces of cardboard (leftover from Christmas presents) and wrap your lights around them. Unwrap them as you walk around the Christmas tree next year.

4. Make Space for Next Year

For this step, we want you to declutter your space by either throwing out/recycling or donating the items you’re not likely to use.

Throw out or recycle any decorations that are broken or in bad condition. If there are any broken ornaments or other décor that is sentimental to you, you could add them to a garland or add a few to a vase with some fairy lights the following year.

You’ll probably buy some new decorations each Christmas time. For every new item you get donate an older one. The same goes for presents. Christmas is a time of gift giving so, for each new present you get try and donate something of yours that you don’t use or wear much anymore.

Decluttering is a great idea to do over Christmas because you’re cleaning up anyways, and it makes space for the New Year.

5. Recycle your Tree

If you’re a household that gets a live Christmas Tree, recycle it by dropping it off at a local depot. This is a hassle free and environmentally friendly way of disposing of your tree.

6. Check for Stains

Check your carpets, rugs, and tablecloths for stains. Spills tend to go unnoticed during the Christmas celebrations and can quickly set into fabrics. The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to get out so make sure to have a thorough check over everything, especially on things like Christmas tablecloths, which will be going into storage for a year.

Good luck with your Christmas clean-up - you'll thank yourself for it next year - and have a great New Year!
