Renovating your bathroom can be a big task, but with a little forethought, you can avoid all possible bathroom design mistakes than can be made. Giving any room a makeover is exciting, but the thought of a fresh, new bathroom is especially appealing. To make this process easier for you, we have compiled a list of mistakes to avoid when renovating your bathroom.

Lack of Ventilation

Lack of ventilation causes trapped water which will cause damage to your bathroom by seeping into the walls. If you’re planning on painting your bathroom, that paint will start chipping and your ceiling will develop water spots. There’ll be damage done to any wood frames and doors and mould and mildew can form.

Without windows and with the lack of natural light, the bathroom will be badly ventilated and dark. Design the bathroom on the outside of your home so that you can install more windows or even a skylight if the former is not possible.

As well as windows, your bathroom should have a ventilation fan in order to prevent mould, and all the other problems. A ventilator stops the room from becoming too humid and avoids all potential ventilation difficulties in your bathroom.

Choosing Style over Functionality

Your interior design plans for your bathroom may be well though out but to bring your dream into focus, you’ll need to put thought into how well the functionality of it will work. Assess your needs and create a practical layout for the room. With a proper strategy in place, the rest of work will be easier.

There’s no point having a bathroom you love the look at if you do not get to enjoy using it. Don’t let your bathroom fall short in meeting your needs – think about who will be using the bathroom, how it will be used, and what will be kept there. After that, the style will come second, and you will be able to create a wonderful bathroom that you can actually use daily.

Water Draining in the Wrong Place

This is a mistake that can easily happen if you don’t have much experience with fitting bathroom. If the water drainage does not line up with the plumbing drain, your shower or sink will not drain properly. If this happens, it can result in bad odour and overall, is impractical.

You are responsible for checking that you have the correct drain connections and if you don’t water pollution may occur. In order to make sure your drains are in the correct place, make sure to measure your bath/shower to the inch and bring in professional help if you are not certain of your own abilities.

Using an Inexperienced Fitter

If you do decide to bring in external help, make sure that they are trustworthy and experienced. A professional should help you to achieve your dream bathroom and when dealing with a room that can cause many potential difficulties, it is even more important.

To avoid getting the wrong person for the job, do a lot of research before hiring your tradesperson. Write a list of questions and ideas that you have and make sure that they can answer you with confidence and familiarity. Ask for photos of past projects and look online for reviews to be on the safe side.

If you yourself think you have enough experience, go ahead, and design your bathroom yourself. It will be rewarding, and you will have control on all decisions throughout the project.

Forgetting Cleaning and Maintenance

Once you’re on the décor stage of your bathroom, you must still keep functionality in mind.

For flooring, use a material that is slip-resistant and easy to clean. Tiles are the most popular type of flooring used – they are visually appealing, and mosaic tiles in particular are slip resistant. Larger tiles are good as there will be less grout on the floor, meaning it will be easier to clean. Darker grout is also a smart way to avoid discolouration and keep maintenance hassle free.

Clean your bathroom floors and everything in it often to keep the room fresh and don’t forget to add ventilation for the steam and condensation. Avoid having a bathroom that is excessively large as it is impractical and will require more cleaning than necessary. It is a waste of time, money, and cleaning products.
