For a homeowner, downsizing doesn't have to mean downgrading. Switching from your large and busy family home to a smaller, more luxurious one could mean the exact opposite. It may mark the beginning of a fresh, simpler life, as you leave all the hustle and bustle of your previous home behind.

There are a lot of financial benefits to downsizing, the obvious ones being cheaper mortgage, insurance and utilities. There is also a lot less maintenance and repairs associated with owning a smaller house. Apartments being developed today also tend to be more eco-efficient while still remaining extravagant. The upkeep of a smaller home makes it easier more the homeowner to upgrade.

If you're thinking about downsizing, it's likely you're no longer restricted with the location. You have no strings tied to space or schools, for example. Many homeowners opt to swap out their large country home for a more compact city apartment, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and theatres. Having more freedom means you must ask yourself what you want to do with it. Think about what you would like to be at your doorstep when downsizing.

With less space to furnish, you can spend more time making sure you decorate your home to perfection. Rugs aid in separating rooms, which is especially helpful in open-plan rooms. Negative space helps open up a room. This can be done by leaving empty space on the wall- don't cover everything in photos and art. Think about the functionality of your furniture and make sure not to duplicate anything in another room - it's a waste of space! Downsizing is also a good time to upgrade any furniture that needs it. Lighting is extremely important to open up an area while keeping it warm and homely. Warm-toned lighting throughout your new home will create an inviting space.

If you think it's time to downsize, do it! The opportunities are there and a fresh start gives you the chance to upgrade to a sophisticated home that suits you.
