Decorate your Mantlepiece for Christmas

If you have a fireplace, you know it gets used a lot more during the Christmas period and is often a festive focal point of your home. Some would say the mantel is as important to decorate as the tree itself, since it’s the first thing Santa sees when he arrives down the chimney with all the presents on Christmas eve!

You can’t celebrate Christmas without warming up by the fireplace with a mug of hot chocolate, so at Housebuild, we bring you festive ideas on how you can deck the halls this Winter.

Christmas Cards

For many of us, it’s tradition to send Christmas cards to our loved ones. And we often receive a lot of them too. Put the cards to good use by displaying a selection of your favourites by the fireplace. Prop them up on the mantlepiece or put them on a string with some wooden pegs and hand them above the fireplace. This shows them off without them getting in the way and leaves space for more décor.

Garland

Christmas garland comes in many variations these days. There is traditional garland, which you can purchase here, full of berries and fake snow. A more contemporary approach would be to add some metallic garland, for example, a gold leaf one, or tinsel garland, which you could also incorporate onto your Christmas tree.

Stockings

Hanging your stockings over the fireplace is a popular tradition at Christmas time. You may have your traditional stockings that you get out every Christmas but this year you may want to try switching it up. You could buy stockings that match the theme of the rest of your home, for example, red and green stockings to match your red and green tree. If you have a young family, DIY could be a fun activity to do with them, making each stocking personal to their owner. Another way to make it personal is by getting each family members’ name printed on a stocking. It’s also a good way to decorate a plain stocking.

Christmas figurines

Christmas figures are charming and suitably festive, and you can add one or several to the fireplace. Place these figurines on top of the mantlepiece or by your fire/stove and embrace the seasonal display. We have a wonderful variety for you to purchase here.

LED lights

LED lights are a fantastic way to brighten up your Christmas. Try wrapping string lights around your garland or Christmas cards. Large lights, like a LED star light could be the centrepiece of your fireplace. You could even put some lights in clear vases or jars to create a warm and festive look.

Festive sign

Keep it simple by adding a warm and welcoming sign on top of your mantlepiece. You can encourage family and friends to get in the Christmas spirit with a sign like ‘Peace’ or ‘Love’. You could even get a sign made with your family’s surname, creating a personal touch to the place.

Match your tree

For a cohesive look, add decorations from your tree to continue the theme throughout your home. Afterall, you love them so much, you shouldn't limit them to your tree. Add baubles to the garland on your mantel and weave in a ribbon for an extra pop of colour that complements the surrounding space.

However you decorate your fireplace this Christmas, we hope you have a good one! 🎄
